From a hillside above the dry Aba-Huab River, Doro Nawas provides guests with far-reaching views across rugged Damaraland. The camp is ideally located as base from which to learn more about both the area’s ancient inhabitants and the visionary ecotourism partnership with today’s communities. The petroglyphs and San rock art of Twyfelfontein are within easy reach.

Sixteen guest units (including a family room) blend in with the scenery, and feature private verandas and outdoor showers. Sleeping out under the stars is also an option. Nature drives and walks reveal more of the desert’s surprising and superbly-adapted flora and fauna.

Place: Doro Nawas rests on the edge of the dry Aba-Huab River overlooking ancient plains with glorious views of the rugged Damaraland area. The camp provides an excellent base for exploring in game drive vehicles and on foot, as well as excursions to view fascinating geological phenomena, petroglyphs – prehistoric rock engravings – and San rock art at Twyfelfontein, Namibia’s first World Heritage Site.

Accommodation: The design and décor of the 16 natural-walled units (including a family unit) blend in with the surrounding scenery. Each unit comprises a bedroom, bathroom, outdoor shower, and veranda for stargazing or sleep-outs under the stars. There are indoor and outdoor dining areas, a pool area and a small curio shop.

Purpose: Doro Nawas Camp is a joint venture between Wilderness Safaris, the Doro !Nawas community and a Namibian empowerment company; this safari experience therefore results in economic empowerment for the local community.

Doro Nawas Camp Overview

Choose unique tented accommodation at Doro Nawas Camp for a visit to Twyfelfontein, when travelling to Namibia’s Damaraland region. Situated on a rocky outcrop on the edge of the dry Aba Huab River, this camp has splendid views across the grasslands in front of the sandstone cliffs of the World Heritage Site.
This outstanding holiday lodge is a mutual undertaking between the Dora !Nawas community in Namibia and Wilderness Safaris – the staff are employed from the community who then benefit from the lodge profit in the long term.
Doro Nawas offers 16 tented chalets in true Namibian fashion – intimate bedrooms stand on stone bases with canvas walls and thatched roofs. Lovely wicker chairs and ceiling fans plus inside and outside showers keep everything cool. Step through large sliding doors to private verandas with breath-taking views into Damaraland. Guests can move their beds out onto the veranda for a night out under mind-boggling starry skies.
The camp features a fireplace and a swimming pool – for contrasting temperatures – as well as an open-plan dining area, lounge, bar and curio shop. The terrace is ideal for sundowners and meals – guests can soak up the views in the coolness of the evening before myriad stars appear. Delicious South African dishes are served with fine wines and beers.
Doro Nawas is certainly the Namibian accommodation of choice near Twyfelfontein and its wide choice of astounding rock art and rock formations. Game drives to other natural wonders such as the desert elephants near the Huab River and incredible birds should not be missed!
