Jacana Camp, Jao Concession

Jacana Camp, Okavango Delta

Named after the Lilly trotter, a tropical wader bird with huge feet, Jacana Camp nestles in the Jao Concession deep in the Okavango Delta. Discover the archetypal Okavango Delta camp, a place where the rhythms of the arriving (and departing) annual inundation of water can be seen and felt. Enjoy5 luxury guest tents, each with an outdoor shower and the main area sheltering beneath giant sycamore-fig trees – the starting point for waterborne voyages of discovery by mokoro.

Jacana is the archetypal Okavango Delta camp. Situated in the beautiful, expansive Jao Flats, Jacana is a place where the rhythms of the arriving (and departing) annual inundation can be seen and felt. The year-round presence of water creates a tranquil environment shared with multitudes of birds – including sought-after ‘Okavango specials’ – and other wildlife which thrives in this unique, water-filled environment.

Jacana features five guest tents, each with an outdoor shower. The main area, sheltered beneath giant sycamore fig trees, is the starting point for waterborne voyages of discovery by boat and mokoro.

INSIDER’S TIP: A safari at Jacana is not complete without enjoying a mokoro ride along the tranquil channels of the Delta. Scan passing trees for the elusive Pel’s fishing-owl!

Place: Situated on a small island in the scenic Jao Flats area of the concession, Jacana is a true water camp, where boating and mokoro excursions take advantage of the quiet channels and inundated floodplains and some of the fascinating creatures of the Delta – maybe even sitatunga – as well as the wealth of waterbirds that can be seen. Day game drives take place all year round.

Accommodation: Five tents are built on raised wooden decks, all with beautiful views over the water. The main area is set on an elevated wooden deck nestled between two enormous sycamore trees, surrounded by dense wild date palms, with a large viewing deck and an open area to sit around the fire.

Purpose: Jacana is dedicated to, and is involved with, projects that support community upliftment – including hosting Children in the Wilderness camps since 2002, and partnering with the Tubu Joint Management Committee and the Pack for a Purpose initiative.

Jacana Camp Overview

Jacana Camp is an archetypal Okavango Delta Camp – the Delta holiday most visitors to Botswana dream of. Named after the lilly trotter, a tropical wader bird with huge feet, the camp nestles in the Jao Concession deep in the Okavango Delta. A Botswana Safari to the depths of the Okavango Delta is exciting and relaxing all at once – Jacana Camp is quite small but the atmosphere is huge. The island is a palm tree lover’s paradise and the lush tropical habitat is a paradise for water-based activities. This model Botswana water camp offers rich sightings of aquatic and wetland species such as the Lesser Jacana, Pel’s Fishing Owl, Wattled Cranes, rare sitatunga and red lechwe antelopes, hippos and crocs. Strolling on the land in between the water are elephant, zebra and their associated lion and cheetah predators. Birders will go mad with the concentrated variety of birds! Laid-back Mokoro trips with the relaxed river guides take guests to see game that they would never have expected in the Jao Flats, one of the Okavango Delta’s largest floodplains. The other option is a boat journey in a 12-seater or 7-seater boat to channels further away. Basic fishing equipment allows guests to try seasonal catch and release fishing. When the weather and water levels allow it, 4×4 game drives take guests to the nearby hide to sneak up on wildlife doing what they know best. Nights spent sleeping out under the stars for six intrepid travellers are a must. Accommodation in this Botswana Okavango Delta camp suits 10 people in six lovely spacious tented chalets. One of the chalets is a family unit with two separate bedrooms and a shared bathroom. Constructed to make the most of the mind-boggling watery landscape, the tented chalets are elevated with large sliding doors and balconies. Ceiling fans and mosquito nets are provided as well as a tea and coffee station and comfortable beds and armchairs. Attractive ceramic double basins, indoor and outdoor showers complete the lodgings picture.
