Everything about this place is vast – its landscapes, its heavens, its wildlife. This is rugged Africa, and then some!
Everything about the 76 000ha Madikwe Game Reserve is vast – its scenery, its wildlife, its skies… The rich and undulating landscape is punctuated by enormous volcanic intrusions (inselbergs) and this unique topography reveals an astonishing array of wildlife – including all of the Big Five. Madikwe Safari Lodge’s three exclusive retreats – Lelapa, Kopano, Dithaba – are located to appreciate the vastness and diversity of the surrounding landscape and wildlife. With unfenced proximity to this wilderness, you’ll experience a thoroughly authentic connection with the wild.
Madikwe’s wooded hills give way to savannah and Kalahari plains, roamed by all of the Big Five and countless other mammals. Look up and you will see hundreds of resident and migrant birds gracing its skies. Coupled with the reserve being malaria-free, this all makes for a special place to explore.
While the luxury of Madikwe Safari Lodge lies in having direct access to some of South Africa’s best Big Five safari experiences, it is also the pleasure of coming back to thoughtful comforts, warm hospitality, and excellent meals after several hours in the bush that defines five-star stays here. The Madikwe brand of luxury comes standard, and what sets each of its retreats apart is its unique feel – appealing to different travelers.
Lelapa (‘family’ in Setswana) is the kind of place that brings people together and welcomes you to settle in. Luxury here is not the fussy kind, it’s freedom – with your every need taken care of – to make the most of each moment. The open-plan main lodge invites meeting up; the Mack & Madi Kids’ Adventure Safari Club is non-stop fun with new friends; and with 12 spacious Suites, including four Family Suites, sociable couples and families alike will find themselves completely at home.
Kopano (‘small gathering’ in Setswana) includes only four Suites and reminds of a traditional homestead. Book an individual Suite or the whole lodge out exclusively – it’s this flexibility that makes Kopano the ideal safari destination for a family/friend adventure, unforgettable honeymoon, or solo discovery. Either way, the lodge’s main living spaces – a dining area, fireplace lounge with library, generously furnished deck, and boma raised above the bush – are yours to enjoy, along with splendid views over the savannah.
Dithaba (‘mountain’ in Setswana) has just four Suites, cleverly positioned to maximise the glorious sense of space and privacy you get when on the reserve. Each Suite is a couple or solo traveller’s retreat; or together, an exclusive home base for a multigenerational family or friend group while on safari. But either way, you’ll find the main lodge area they link to great for gatherings of family, new and old friends – replete with rounds of sundowners on the Star Deck and festive bush dinners around the boma fire.
Located in the central-eastern region of Madikwe Game Reserve, South Africa in an area well known for its superior game viewing, Madikwe Safari Lodge is cradled between rolling hills, overlooking game-filled plains intersected by the Marico River and framed by the Dwarsberg Hills. The family-owned lodge consists of three self-contained camps, providing intimate accommodation in 20 luxury suites.
Guests at Madikwe Safari Lodge have a choice to stay together as a group of family and friends, or to have a more private bush experience as a couple in Lelapa Lodge, Dithaba Lodge and Kopano Lodge.
Each suite at this Madikwe accommodation is strikingly organic in design and comprises a comfortable sitting area, romantic circular fireplace in the bedroom and spacious dressing area with personal bar. The spacious en-suite bathroom boasts a large bathtub, and indoor and outdoor showers. French doors open onto a wooden deck leading to an inviting private plunge pool. The focal areas feature a series of intimate sitting areas and shaded outdoor seating on the expansive covered decks. There are indoor and outdoor fireplaces and a covered outdoor living room offering beanbags and cushions for casual bonhomie. Living areas are designed to be cool in summer and warm in winter and the boma lends the perfect ambiance for evocative dinners around a blazing fire.
Madikwe’s game viewing is of a very high standard, aided by the fact that all guides are in radio contact with one another, and provides regular sightings of zebra, Impala, wildebeest, giraffe, warthog, white rhino, lion, wild dog, elephant, white rhino, brown hyena, and spotted hyena. Excellent bird watching opportunities with over 350 bird species.
