Elephants love this region, swimming in the rivers and munching on the lush vegetation including the seed pods of the winter thorn trees that shade the camp. Plenty of antelope and zebra herds, crocs and hippos too. Such a picturesque riverine scene is Chongwe with exceptional service and five-star hospitality adding to the safari experience in a wildlife-rich region you simply have to experience on boat, in canoe, in 4×4 vehicle and on foot.
The camp boasts nine intimate safari tents with ensuite showers raised on solid concrete bases with canvas roofs to regulate the temperatures and ensure they do not impact on nature. Families and groups who like to be alone will love the private Albida suite combining two tents and adding a comfy and attractive lounge, dining area, swimming pool and campfire at one end of the main camp. Again, the Cassia Suite is super private and perfect for romantic honeymoon couples in its own nature refuge under lush trees and with its own plush facilities and deck views.
Chill time in the main area is motivated by the extreme beauty of the destination with its large canvas rooftop hanging in the trees hiding a delightful bar and plush safari-style lounge. Watch wildlife all day as it wanders through camp and along the river banks and learn about the biodiversity of the valley from your expert game rangers and guides. Grab a book from the library and read about the area’s history while you sip a G&T.

Overview
Venture to the edge of a mighty river in the shadow of a mountain escarpment, where you’ll feel right at home under a shady grove of trees. Wake up from a peaceful nap to the sound of an elephant rubbing against the side of your tent as it lumbers past. This is the magical Chongwe River Camp, set on the banks of the Chongwe River, about 80 km from the mighty Zambezi. It’s a forested valley and a haven for wildlife including lions, leopards and wild dogs.
Nine classic tents are designed to make the most of what Mother Nature provided, each one offering a panoramic view along the Chongwe River, a spacious open-air bathroom, and a stunning deck with comfortable lounge chairs, decorated with local textiles and handcrafted furniture.
Enjoy mouth-watering meals in the plush riverside lounge as elephants wander past and sip a cold drink at the poolside when the going gets too hot. A thrilling feature at the camp is the wildlife hide that makes for excellent photography opportunities and for spotting rare nocturnal creatures, birds and more.
The Lower Zambezi National Park is one of our favourite pristine wilderness destinations and we aim to keep it that way in tune with the conservation standards followed by all camps along this river and the great Zambezi. Get out on silent canoes and boats, see the wildlife on foot and enjoy night drives into thick vegetation to find animals surviving in the wilds of Zambia. Fishing for tiger fish and bream is fun too while birding reveals some endemic species you never thought existed.
