Victoria Falls

Click here for our very best hotel and lodge accommodation and safari packages to Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe, one of the greatest tourist destinations in Africa. Welcome to the one destination that everyone must see in southern Africa, the region’s Adventure Capital and awe-inspiring World Heritage Site, Victoria Falls. A village and a region tucked between Zambia and Zimbabwe on the river Zambezi showcasing the mighty waterfall, wildlife galore and some of the best views in the world.

Vic Falls is a highlight of every Zimbabwe safari so make sure you also make time to visit this overwhelming natural landmark for an unforgettable holiday filled with excitement and relaxation. It’s true that Victoria Falls is one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World as its claim to fame is that it is the largest waterfall in the world when considering its height and width together that create the single largest sheet of flowing water.

It’s true that Victoria Falls is a recognised UNESCO World Heritage Site, also called the Mosi-oa-Tunya thanks to this largest curtain of falling water in the world that measures 1708 m wide and features up to 500 million litres of water per minute descending at 61 m (Devil’s Cataract), 83 m (Main Falls), 99 m (Rainbow Falls), 98 m (Eastern Cataract).

There are 8 magnificent gorges of basalt rock and a number of islands in the central area where rare migratory birds breed such as the Taita Falcon and Black Eagle. In addition, the delicate ecosystem of the riverine ‘rainforest’ within the waterfall splash area needs the constant water falling there and the high humidity created in such a zone and which causes that huge spray you can view from 30 km away in either Zimbabwe or Zambia.

Did you know?

Victoria Falls is about twice the height of North America’s Niagara Falls and well over twice its width and one of the two islands near the middle is named Livingstone Island as it’s the point from which Livingstone first viewed the falls. The main streams are named the Devil’s Cataract (called Leaping Water by some), the Main Falls, the Rainbow Falls (the highest) and the Eastern Cataract.

Highlights

  • Plan your Vic Falls excursion during a full moon to observe a stunning natural phenomenon. Wait for the sun to set and the moon to rise and see how the light from the moon bounces off the spray of the Falls and creates a rainbow in the dead of night!
  • Take a hike into the Victoria Falls Rainforest to see unusual and endemic plants and animals in this protected ecosystem that relies on constant water and it is here that it “rains” every day of the year!
  • Walk across the impressive Victoria Falls Knife-edge Bridge to look right down on the Eastern Cataract, the Main Falls and Boiling Point where the water turns and flows at speed down the Batoka Gorge.
  • The Falls is easily accessible from Zambia’s Livingstone where walks start and from the town of Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe just after the customs post where walks also start and there are many hotels and lodges offering coffees and lunches.

So, treat your spouse to a once-in-a-lifetime honeymoon or take the entire family on a well-deserved family safari vacation with impressive hotel and lodge options. There are loads of things to keep you on your toes in this lively town. Choose from an extensive menu of activities, from sightseeing and cultural experiences to golfing and fishing!

It was the famous Scottish missionary and explorer, David Livingstone, who was the first European recorded to ever view the falls on 16 November 1855, from what is now known as Livingstone Island. Livingstone named his sighting in honour of Queen Victoria, but the Sotho Livingstone also called the Falls Seongo or Chongwe, meaning “The Place of the Rainbow”, due to the constant spray.

Wildlife Refuges in Three National Parks

Two beautiful and much-needed national parks at the falls remain small refuges for wildlife and plans – Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park is 66 square km and Victoria Falls National Park is 23 square km. Not far off and adejcent to the Victoria Falls National Park is the splendid Zambezi National Park, extending 40 kilometres west along the river. The best part about all these conservation areas is that animals can move between the two Zimbabwean parks and can also reach Matetsi Safari Area, Kazuma Pan National Park and Hwange National Park to the south.

Victoria Falls is the meeting point of Zimbabwe, Zambia and Botswana and on the Botswanan side of the border, Chobe National Park is a short distance away, making for a popular day trip thanks to its unusual and diverse flora and fauna, so different than Hwange National Park. Voyage2Africa customises your tour into Victoria Falls to include time in Zambia on the Lower Zambezi National Park, and time in Botswana in Kasane, Chobe and further afield.
