Zambia Safari

Zambia

Landlocked Zambia welcomes visitors to experience the very best of African safaris so come and enjoy its breath-taking scenery and pristine wilderness areas. From Big 5 game viewing safaris to canoeing on the mighty Zambezi River and adventuring around the majestic Victoria Falls, Zambia has everything you’d wish for as part of your African holiday.

Over 30% of Zambia’s land is allocated towards National Parks – wildlife conservation and sustainable tourism are important and many of these areas are very much off the beaten track, pristine and uncrowded. The country shares the world’s largest waterfall, Victoria Falls, with its neighbour Zimbabwe, in the central tourism mecca of Livingstone. The mild climate, wealth of wildlife, good conservation and ecotourism initiatives ensure that Zambia remains a haven for people and animals, plants and biodiversity.

Zambia is a safari enthusiast’s dream and an all year round destination. Not only is there an array of some of the world’s biggest and best game parks to choose from, but so too are there diverse water and land safari activities available. Whether it’s a canoeing safari along the game-rich shores of the Lower Zambezi National Park or following in the footsteps of the pioneers into the Zambian interior on a mobile walking safari, you are sure to find something in the continent’s spectacular wildlife and scenery to thrill and amaze you.

Venture into the wilderness of one of the greatest wildlife sanctuaries ever, South Luangwa National Park, boasting the strongly flowing Luangwa River as the life blood for the nearly 10 000 square km region. Look out for 60 different animal species and 400 bird species, but sadly, the rhino is no more.

Lusaka is the capital and largest city of Zambia, now becoming known as one of the fastest-developing cities in Southern Africa. Many visitors start or end their Zambia holidays here, or in Livingstone at the edge of the Zambezi and Vic Falls.

What to Love about Zambia

  • SOUTH LUANGWA NATIONAL PARK: An unspoilt nirvana with some rare animal treasures. Look for the Thornicroft’s giraffe and Crawshay’s zebra, endemic to South Luangwa. Go there for productive leopard sightings and the puku, which is rarely seen outside Zambia.
  • LOWER ZAMBEZI NATIONAL PARK: Spoil yourself with a holiday to this watery retreat where you get to view game in style on board a canoe. Wonderfully untamed and offering a unique safari experience – fishing, nature walks, boat cruises plus day and night game drives. Rustic luxury camps made for getting back to nature and expert guides who love what they do.
  • VICTORIA FALLS AND LIVINGSTONE: The adventure capital of Zambia, Livingstone Town gives you access to adrenaline-charged holidays, just like in Zimbabwe’s Vic Falls. Go white water rafting or bungee jumping off the Victoria Falls Bridge. You can even choose to walk with lions or take the scenic flight above the falls, whatever floats your boat.
  • LIUWA PLAIN NATIONAL PARK: Escape to the remote recesses of Zambia’s pristine bush where tranquillity in nature is guaranteed. Witness the second largest Wildebeest Migration and the high concentrations of predator species that reside in the park. Get your camera out and capture the extraordinary images of lightning bolts during a thunderstorm.
  • KAFUE NATIONAL PARK: Never settle for second best. Choose a holiday to this untouched wilderness and enjoy front row seats to largest species diversity in Zambia. Make sure to visit the Busanga Plains where you can easily spot the cheetah. Flocks of cranes and other rare birds love these wetlands and open areas.

Did you know?

Several human cultures lived in Zambia dating back more than 36 000 years ago, as discovered in archaeological excavation work on the Zambezi Valley and Kalambo Falls.  Here, ancient camp site tools were found as well as the fossil skull remains of Broken Hill Man dating way back to 300 000 years BC!

Highlights

  • Zambia contains abundant natural resources, including minerals, wildlife, forestry, freshwater and arable land and has been recognised by the World Bank as one of the world’s fastest economically growing countries.
  • David Livingstone was the first European to see the magnificent waterfalls on the Zambezi River in 1855, naming them the Victoria Falls after Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom. He described them thus: “Scenes so lovely must have been gazed upon by angels in their flight”.
  • The Zambezi falls about 100 metres over the 1.6-kilometre-wide Victoria Falls, then flows into Lake Kariba. The Zambezi valley, running along the southern border, is both deep and wide
  • A total of 242 mammal species are found in the country, with most occupying the woodland and grassland ecosystems. The Rhodesian giraffe and Kafue lechwe are endemic to Zambia while about 757 bird species have been seen in the country.
