Kulala Desert Lodge Sossusvlei

Kulala Desert Lodge

The kulalas (chalets) are built to cleverly make the most of the pristine landscape. Enjoy the lodge but most of all, enjoy the beauty of the Namib Naukluft area in the popular Sossusvlei region. The Kulala Desert Lodge is the ideal base, situated within the private Kulala Wilderness Reserve south of Sesriem.

Kulala Desert Lodge’s location at the foot of the majestic Sossusvlei dunes allows for stunning views in every direction, while its private entrance to the Namib Naukluft National Park makes it the closest location to Sossusvlei. The camp is ideal for self-drives and groups.

Twenty-three thatched and canvas tents (including two family units), each built on raised wooden platforms make for airy, comfortable accommodation, with a rooftop area for sleep-outs under the stars. Afternoons around the pool provide relief from the heat, while the wraparound veranda at the main area overlooks a waterhole, and private tours of the dunes provide the ultimate Sossusvlei experience.

INSIDER’S TIP: Try your hand at desert photography – whether capturing the red colour of the dunes in the early morning light or the otherworldly tree skeletons standing starkly across the floor of Dead Vlei.

Place: Kulala Desert Lodge is situated at the foot of the majestic Sossusvlei Dunes and is the closest location to Sossusvlei (via a private gate exclusive to Wilderness Safaris vehicles). Scenic nature drives and walks are available; guided electric powered ‘fat bikes’ are a fun way to explore the spectacular open plains. A highlight is to experience the area on a hot air balloon safari (weather permitting and at extra cost).

Accommodation: The camp comprises 23 thatched and canvas tents (including two family units), each built on a raised wooden platform, with a rooftop area for sleep-outs under the stars. The main area includes a pool and wraparound veranda overlooking a waterhole.

Purpose: Our programme to remove internal fences and livestock has resulted in the recovery of this ecosystem and its wildlife.

NOTE: Ballooning closed on 25 December and 01 January, and from mid-January to mid-February.

The only lodge that looks directly over this natural feature where the wind carves the dunes into magnificent formations and where the sun always shines on one side – Kulala Desert Lodge gets its name from the local Oshiwambo word meaning ‘to sleep’.
The 23 kulalas (chalets) are built to cleverly make the most of this vast vista. Enjoy the lodge but most of all, enjoy the beauty of the Namib Naukluft area in the popular Sossusvlei region.
Accommodation in stunning canvas and wood thatched rooms is slightly raised off the ground to ensure that breezes flow through during the hot summer months. Private roof-top sleeping decks up a step ladder allow guests to really sleep under the stars – or a full moon! Polished wooden floors and large beds plus en-suite clay bathrooms with showers and complimentary toiletries add to the comfort of the Kulala Desert Lodge accommodation.
Situated in the heart of the desert close to Naukluft Mountain Park, Sossusvlei and Sesriem, this Namibian holiday destination promotes outdoor activities such as walking trails – the Tsauchab River Trail – horse riding safaris, bird watching, balloon safaris and sundowner tours. The main areas at Kulula Desert Lodge peep out from under thatched roofs which mimic the dunes – enjoy the restaurant, bar and lounge, spilling out onto the veranda outside.
