Experience the most classic Zambian safari ever at the authentic, rustic-chic Old Mondoro Bush Camp on the edge of the mighty Zambezi River where wilderness surrounds you and you feel the beat of the Lower Zambezi National Park.
Feel the soul of the African bush from this tranquil and remote setting. You don’t have to venture far to see game. Sit back, relax and enjoy the sweet melodies of nature all around you. Expose yourself to the elements as you seek out the many secrets hidden in this vast, untamed wildlife mecca. And you still retire to luxury chalets created to blend into the environment that was here way before humanity.
The small sister camp of Chiawa, Old Mondoro is about getting back to nature, off the beaten track, because you want to. It’s truly intimate, friendly, a wonderful respite from life as you know it. Five wooden tented chalets raised on stilts focus on the river views and the wildlife everywhere, elephants in camp, hippos in your front garden and beautiful antelope everywhere. Lion and leopard sightings are common here and game rangers have a passion for all life.
Huge old winter thorn trees shade this traditional camp, ‘Mondoro’ meaning lion in the local Goba language. The people honour a mythical white lion that used to live nearby and whose descendants now prowl and hunt in this Lower Zambezi National Part region. Old Mondoro is wild and free, just like this old lion, and there are no fences or restrictions on the wildlife movement.
This is one of the last true bush camps that highly respects all wild animals and reserves love for the waterbuck, the baboons, the elephant and all the buck that move stealthily in the lush vegetation. It’s a remote and private space and guests can look out from their private decks, over the strongly flowing Zambezi waters – large beds canopied with mosquito nets, wide reed windows, outdoor baths are also plunge pools and open air showers ideal for night washes under the stars.
Staff are on hand to serve your every need so wander down to the main areas to chat to them and hear their backgrounds. Sit in the open air dining area and await the best meals ever, in the starlight or in the gleam of the morning sun – food here is decadent and wholesome, and there is always a lot.
Both Old Mondoro Bush Camp and its sister camp, Chiawa Camp, are situated in the middle of the pristine wildlife and habitat zones of the Lower Zambezi National Park in Zambia. There is no other safari camp like Old Mondoro, located about 30km downstream from the Chiawa Camp, boasting an open and more adventurous feel, yet offering exceptional, personalized service and a relaxing retreat after the days’ thrilling activities.
This seasonal Zambian camp is open May to October only. Old Mondoro offers Zambia holiday packages tailored to suit your pocket. With only eight guests accommodated at this Lower Zambezi safari camp, it is an ideal camp for small groups.
Its structures are temporary, reminiscent of the traditional mobile camps of East Africa. They are rebuilt from scratch and dismantled at the end of each safari season. Appropriately constructed of canvas and natural materials, the camp truly offers the very best bush experience unrivalled by no other. A true sustainable tourism approach to conservation and eco guiding in the Lower Zambezi National Park wilderness area.
En-suite amenities include indoor flush toilets and wash basin with an outdoor shower and huge ‘splash tub’, with mind blowing outlooks over the Zambezi River. Each room also has a shaded timber sun deck complete with a comfortable day bed for relaxation with the very best of views. Beautifully decorated and serviced, these bush chalets are made for disconnecting from your other life.
Sumptuous meals and fresh bread baked daily from a home-made oven are supplied daily from a traditional bush kitchen. The experience, in its entirety, is unpretentious and simple, but ensures a unique safari that gives guests the best bush experience possible.
At Old Mondoro Bush Camp, walking safaris, open vehicle game drives, motor-boat safaris, canoeing and fishing – mostly Tigerfish (catch and release) are activities on offer. Guests are assured of a complete and gratifying Lower Zambezi safari experience. This conservation area is known for its large herds of mammals, its birds and its predators. Get back to nature the best way ever, with Old Mondoro Bush Camp!
