Royal Madikwe has found the balance between entertaining international and local guests on a luxury, exclusive scale, investing in local community projects and conserving the natural environment around them. In 1991, farming land took on a new goal, to become safari land for wild animals and this was when Operation Phoenix was conceptualised and enforced.
Over some 7 years, more than 8000 animals were reintroduced into land that had been rehabilitated for nature conservation, and the benefits of this wildlife then affected communities positively too. The wildlife did so well that today, Madikwe can donate and sell animals to other game reserves short of certain species! So, when you go out on game drive, you will be sure to find the Big 5, plus cheetah, wild dogs and more. Madikwe’s elephant population is the second largest in Sou Africa, after Kruger.

We can’t applaud Royal Madikwe enough. The food wasn’t 5 star it was 6 star and we couldn’t find any faults in any food! I loved how at every meal time they would set our table in a different space in the lodge depending on the weather that day. Our young daughters got so much attention and drank plenty of pink milkshakes so that was amazing too. Oh, and there was plenty of wildlife too!
