Experience the best lodge by far in the spectacular Selous Game Reserve aka Nyerere National Park in Tanzania, Sand Rivers Selous. This is definitely one of Nomad Tanzania’s signature Tanzania properties and it features walking safaris and superb wildlife experiences for all who venture this way.
Sand Rivers Selous offers a superb all-around outdoor experience on an East African tour with opportunities for everything from game drives in open-sided game vehicles, to walking safaris, boat safaris, fly-camps or combinations of all these.
The camp was carefully chosen to be a bird’s eye view, a frog’s peep-out point, a voyeur’s paradise, a haven in the northern Selous Game Reserve – from its prime position in the midst of river channels, oxbow lakes and open plains. The site reflects the epitome of wild Africa and harbours all kinds of animals, great and small: elephants, hippos, lions, leopards and every other African animal in the book.
Walk quietly through the wilderness, never disturbing a thing, cruises silently up the rivers never making a sound, and drive slowly and carefully into the game reserve to find what you are looking for. It’s about merging with nature, blending in and becoming part of the unique magic in the African wilderness, just for a bit. Sand Rivers Selous is rustic all right but it still offers guests the opportunity to spend a night or two in the wilds in their unique fly camp. Book one of 8 canvas suites on the banks of the Rufiji River and take it from there, a wild experience in the heart of Tanzania.
This place is outstanding and the team exhibits a wealth of knowledge and tons of warm friendliness and hospitality. Children will gain so much from exceptional game guides and the immersion in raw nature. They will love the rustic bungalows, completely open to the skies and therefore in union with nature, close to the river where hippos grunt all night.
As part of the package, book a fly camp for unforgettable camping in pure nature and sleep in tents with net windows for absolute connection to the stars and elements outside. Your team looks after you, serving you and cooking your food, setting up a bucket shower and taking you out for interpretative walks.
Pure luxury in a remote place – a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Time for trekking through the wilderness, fishing in the river, swimming in hot springs and appreciating plenty of game drives.
In addition, Nyerere National Park is a versatile destination with seasonal lakes, the Rufiji River, woodlands and open grasslands. Look out for packs of wild dogs, large pythons and we crocodiles laying in the sun. Add to this, hippos, giraffes, elephants, plains game, monkeys, lions and hyenas too.
Sand Rivers Selous is a seasonal safari camp positioned on a wide curve of the Rufiji River in the heart of the game rich Selous Game Reserve, Tanzania, now also known as Nyerere National Park. The camp is located further west than the other properties in the reserve in a slightly quieter area, with direct access to boating safari up to Steiglers Gorge. Sand Rivers offers luxurious accommodations, spectacular views and excellent guiding that will impress the most discerning of travellers.
Sand Rivers Selous provides accommodation in 8 open-fronted, stone and thatch cottages, with 5 Standard Rooms and 3 Suites. The cottages feature en-suite bathrooms with hot and cold running water, flush toilets and powerful showers. The rooms are designed to let in natural light and afford superb vistas over the river. The suites have all the luxuries available in the standard rooms with the added bonus of large living areas and private plunge pools.
Chill out in beautiful guest areas in a spacious, stilted dining tent set right on the banks of Rufiji with fantastic river views. A rustic appeal with its combination of white-washed stone walls, carved wooden furniture and African decorations, embracing the lounge, bar, dining area and library too. Even a swimming pool offers wonderful respite from the hot middays.
Sand Rivers Selous welcomes children over 8 years old, with a minimum of 12 years on any walking of fly camping activity. This Selous camp is not suitable for very young children as all of the bedrooms and the lounge and dining area have open fronts with a steep drop going down to the Rufiji River. Parents are cautioned to accompany their children at all times as the camp is not fenced, allowing wildlife to pass through at any time. Call us to chat about your next family safari tour in Africa!
