Enter a world of adventure and make-believe, immersed in true colonial extravagance, at the luxurious Simbavati River Lodge in the private Timbavati Game Reserve. Family-friendly five-star safari accommodation in the Greater Kruger National Park where children can safely play and get involved in stimulating environmental education programmes. It’s all about tented excellence for safaris of a lifetime in South Africa.
What a gorgeous setting this is, on the banks of the Kruger’s Nhlaralumi River where thick riverine vegetation is the playground for herds of elephants, big cats and small mammals galore. Simbavati River Lodge offers travellers to Africa top of the range safari accommodation in expansive family chalets where birds call and the breeze softly rustles in the indigenous trees.
While children search for magical treasures, make plaster casts of wild animals and identify beautiful birds, parents will be sipping drinks on the vast deck watching animals come down to the river. Simbavati means ‘the place where the lions come down from the stars’ in the local Shangaan language – how apt as Timbavati is the home to the legendary white lions, as well as the Big Five.
Sit all day on the sunny game viewing deck as elephants right near you and the birds flit about your tables. The camp is inspired by the sensory delights of Cederberg Ridge and guests can sample delicious foods right here, based on organic produce, healthy cooking techniques and delightful breakfast pastries and breads, plus vegan offerings too.
Three family chalets with different layouts offer one king size bed and two single beds in separate bedrooms, a bathtub set on a stone ledge and a large rain shower. Gaze in awe at the wildlife before you from your private deck, with a coffee or cold drink in hand from the coffee machine and mini bar. Aircon and fans to cool you down, electric blankets for the chill and eco-friendly amenities.
Six lavish tented suites are made for couples on a break away from hectic city life who want to find time together in nature. Enjoy king size beds, outside rain showers, and game viewing decks over the river and wilderness beyond. Honeymoon couples will fall in love with the secluded romantic tented villas with their own solar heated splash pools where elephants love to visit too! Beautiful amenities for beautiful people so do book a special honeymoon package deal for your dream safari in in Timbavati.

The main attractions at Simbavati River Lodge are the game drives and the food! Imagine the aroma of a rich venison roast cooking slowly while the sun sets? Campfire bomas are the best way to eat in nature, freshly grilled meat on the firer as staff drift around serving your drinks and entertaining you with their stories. Or the wafting scent of bacon and eggs and roasted coffee beans after a busy morning game drive? All food is fresh from the fam and baked according to age old recipes for your culinary delight.
Tuck into an afternoon high tea before game drives then sumptuous African style dinners around the campfire in the boma at night. Five-star food and five-star animal sightings ensure happy guests who learn so much from the rangers’ intimate knowledge of the trees, small creatures, and varying habitats.

We felt so at home at Simbavati River Lodge, as if we were family. The staff are so friendly we felt as if we had known them for years! Managers Kobus and Thandy laid on the hospitality for us, so professional yet so warm. CJ and Happy showed us so much enthusiasm on game drives and taught us so much about the environment. Waitresses made us feel like gold too! We had an exceptional time at Simbavati and will be back.
