Day to Day Itinerary
Day 1
3 NIGHTS, FULL BOARD BASIS
Arrive in Kigali and meet your expert safari guide who will educate and assist you throughout your tour. Drive the 3 hours to Virunga Lodge and take in mind-blowing Virunga Volcanoes views rolling out to the lush Musanze Valley, Lake Bulera and Ruhondo. Appreciate your Rwandese-style furnished room, one of only 10 delightful cabins with private decks made for sunrises over the mountains and lakes, before setting off on gorilla trekking adventures into the thick forests.
Day 2
An early breakfast provides energy for the gorilla trekking day in Parc National des Volcans, home to the mountain gorilla and lush bamboo forests on the lower hills of the Virunga Volcanoes. Climb through dense forests and glades for three hours until your guide locates these majestic and charismatic primates. Observe and stay with these gentle giants for one hour. Return to the lodge for a late lunch but such adventures can take longer due to the difficult locating of these elusive creatures in wet and muddy environs.
Day 3
Your last day at Virunga Lodge offers a choice of amazing activities: choose to adventure off on your second gorilla trek (another permit is needed) or rather hike into the forests in search of the rare golden monkey. Take a magical walk to the grave of the famous Dian Fossey, and the eerie gorilla cemetery where some of her favourite gorillas were buried. Visit the Ellen DeGeneres Campus of the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund near Kinigi and visit a local community at Lake Bulera, a birders’ delight too.
Day 4
Sadly, it’s time to depart the beautiful Virunga Lodge and drive to Kigali. If there is time, embark on a fascinating city tour and see the Kigali Genocide Memorial, part of the country’s devasting history. Then get your transfer to the airport to fly to your next destination.
