The island is one of the Seychelles’ 42 inner islands, nearly 6km north of Silhouette Island, and 27 km northwest of Mahé. The island boasts four picturesque beaches: East Beach, West Beach (or Grande Anse), Honeymoon Cove, and Dive Beach and the highest point of the island is a mere 180 m, its tiny space enclosed in a 7.55 km perimeter!
The Beaufond family from Réunion owned North Island from 1826 until the 1970s and grew plantations of fruits and spices and produced guano, fish oil and copra. These natural industries were sold in the 1970s and the island was neglected, consumed by feral animals and alien invasive plant species.
In 1981, Marius Maier inherited North Island from his father and he set out to return the island to its original pristine state before habitation. He aimed to eradicate many unwanted animal and plant species, including pigs, rats, cows, cats, Indian myna birds, coconuts, casuarina, and lantana weeds.
He gradually reintroduced indigenous flora and fauna, including giant tortoises, certain birds, and endemic trees including the famous Coco de Mer palm. in 1982, Marius Maier and the villagers established a turtle nest monitoring centre and in 1997, North Island was purchased for US$5 million by Wilderness Holdings Limited, an ecotourism company from South Africa. They opened a private resort in 2003, aiming at the eco-tourism market, with 11 private villas.
North Island stood in for Tracy Island in the 2004 live-action adaptation of Thunderbirds and in May 2011, it was the site for the royal honeymoon of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.
