We recommend some of the best accommodation in Madikwe, a collection of the finest luxury safari lodges and tented camps in this malaria free big five reserve. A good example of an eco-lodge is the Mosetlha Bush Camp, a renowned family-owned bush camp that promises exclusive and private wilderness encounters while ensuring minimal environmental impacts.
A wonderful child-friendly destination is the Bush House, a completely renovated traditional farmhouse, now a highly sought-after lodge with 6 chic rooms and a unique homely aura and personal touch. We also love the full-on luxury option at Royal Madikwe, flash safari lodge where a range of diverse accommodation suits all needs and tastes, and a kiddies’ programme keeps the young ones busy all day learning more about biodiversity than they ever thought possible.
Madikwe Game Reserve features some of the top safari lodges in South Africa and most of them are family friendly and open to exclusive group vacations in the heart of an untouched wilderness. Long ago, much of this game reserve was a series of neighbouring farms which have now joined hands with the province to extend the game reserve into this private conservation area that protects wildlife and habitats.
A total of 30 top lodges in this game reserve offer varying degrees of luxury accommodation for visitors to South Africa, and locals. There are private lodges and commercial lodges and each one believes in the principles of sustainable tourism where local communities are part of the conservation equation.
Our top picks for accommodation are our ‘big five’ Madikwe lodges based on value, service and feedback over the years.
Summers are extremely hot in Madikwe Game Reserve so the best time to visit is between March and November, Autumn into Winter then Spring. Dry season is May to September when temperatures drop to a comfortable 20 degrees Celsius in the day and nights can get as cold as 2 degrees!
Dry season offers excellent game viewing because there are fewer tourists, therefore fewer 4×4 vehicles, the vegetation is thinner and animals are easier to spot, and animals are also congregating at water holes, rivers and springs. Skies are clear and the days are hot and dry.
Rainy season is beautiful with all the new greenery and small animals being born but it is also very humid and wet and the roads are harder to transverse as they can be muddy. Rain starts to fall from October until April.
