Overview

George and Joy Adamson are famous in Kenya for their lion conservation initiatives and books written about their special lions and the work they did so Elsa’s Kopje is a memory of these days, a luxury safari lodge high up in the Mughwango Hill of Mount Meru region.

Meru National Park is a conservation region located east of Meru, 350 km from Nairobi and its 870 square km are well loved by all Kenyans – high rainfalls mean lush grasslands and swamps for all wildlife and birds.  Elsa the Lioness is buried in this park and part of Joy Adamson’s ashes were scattered on her gravesite.

Elsa’s Kopje is scattered along the hills between the boulders, camouflaged here to blend into the landscape and promote an eco-friendly approach to tourism – it is constructed above the original site of George Adamson’s rustic campsite and offers plenty of accommodation for honeymoon couples, families and groups who love their privacy in the wilderness.

Elsa’s Kopje Lodge works closely with the Tharaka people, based near the southern boundary of the park, purchasing their handcrafts, and encouraging their traditional dancing to finance their schools and other projects.
