Elsas Kopje one of Kenyas most luxurious retreats

Travel to Kenya for that dream safari holiday of all time and stay at Elsa’s Kopje, one of the country’s most luxurious retreats in the Mount Meru region on Mughwango Kopje offering spectacular safari lodge accommodation and scintillating views across the Meru plains.

If you know about George and Joy Adamson and their lions, then you will understand that Elsa’s Kopje is named after Elsa the lioness, heroine in the book Born Free – so is extra special in terms of Kenya history and conservation stories.

Sprawled out along the hillside, between the boulders and rocks, find 9 glorious safari suites created for privacy and panoramic views across the Meru Plains. Enjoy an authentic and traditional safari design from days of yore in Kenya when explorers and hunters passed by and wanted their lavish comforts and sustenance!

Elsa’s Kopje is for travellers who need a break from the rat race, don’t want to see too many tourists and who enjoy a subtle sense of luxury where sufficient game and birdlife fill their days with pleasure. The accommodation does not stop there – a large lavish family cottage with 2 bedrooms allows plenty of space and privacy with its large lounge while another private house, also two-bedroomed, caters for groups who like to be alone in nature.

The choice of three honeymoon suites means that this destination in Kenya’s Meru region is well loved by couples in love who need time alone in a tranquil, captivating landscape where wildlife viewing is the main attraction. Enjoy the traditional designs of thatch and wood, stone and cotton in each chalet, private decks and sunken bath tubs adding joy to your sojourn.

The private house creates a unique enclave with large lounge and dining area, private swimming pool and large deck and garden for 6 people. All guests can choose to socialise in the central lounge bar area with its swimming pool on the saddle of a hill looking out over the landscape of bush and mountains.

Mount Kenya is not far off and Meru covers a vast 870 square km of hills open plains, wetlands and water channels creating natural oases for animals in all seasons. Make sure you get to see the resident elephant, buffalo, lion, leopard, hippo, crocodile, reticulated giraffe, Beisa oryx, lesser kudu, waterbuck, Burchell’s zebra, Grevy zebra, Grant’s gazelle, gerenuk, dik dik, warthog, baboon, vervet monkey, and more!

Meru has a rhino sanctuary for the black and white species, as they reintroduce these iconic Big 5 animals into Africa and allow their populations to grow – if you love birds, Meru is the place to birdwatch when the European migrants arrive.

George and Joy Adamson are famous in Kenya for their lion conservation initiatives and books written about their special lions and the work they did so Elsa’s Kopje is a memory of these days, a luxury safari lodge high up in the Mughwango Hill of Mount Meru region.

Watch elephant herds wander by from on high, on spacious decks that look out over vast Kenyan plains and waterways, oases for all wildlife in the Meru National Park.

Meru National Park is a conservation region located east of Meru, 350 km from Nairobi and its 870 square km are well loved by all Kenyans – high rainfalls mean lush grasslands and swamps for all wildlife and birds.  Elsa the Lioness is buried in this park and part of Joy Adamson’s ashes were scattered on her gravesite.

Elsa’s Kopje is scattered along the hills between the boulders, camouflaged here to blend into the landscape and promote an eco-friendly approach to tourism – it is constructed above the original site of George Adamson’s rustic campsite and offers plenty of accommodation for honeymoon couples, families and groups who love their privacy in the wilderness.

Book Elsa’s Private House for a family safari into East Africa, brimming with luxury and comfort with two bedrooms, a comfy main sitting and dining room, and a private garden and pool, plus a personal pro guide for your entire vacation. Three honeymoon suites promise romance in the sun, a cosy cottage refuge for moments between game drives and walks.

Elsa’s Honeymoon suite is the ultimate in romance, with three levels and breath-taking views, the perfect cottage to while away your days after an exciting morning of game viewing. Only 9 thatched and stone chalets cater for couples who love the views in between the rocks and the communal lounge, dining room and swimming pool area with its inviting swimming pool and friendly service.

Elsa’s Kopje works closely with the Tharaka people, based near the southern boundary of the park, purchasing their handcrafts, and encouraging their traditional dancing to finance their schools and other projects. Eat fresh produce from these areas, straight from community farms in the local Kanjoo community.
