Long ago, in the 1880s, a Swazi king called Kapama hunted with his tribe in the northern Drakensberg mountain region around Mariepskop. Kapama Game Reserve remembers this ruler and today aims to conserve the animals in the area. The introduction of a game relocation programme added diverse wildlife to the reserve including elephant, buffalo, rhinoceros, and large populations of giraffe, impala, blue wildebeest and kudu. Predators include lion, leopard, cheetah, spotted hyena and many smaller species.
