Created in the 1950,s from agricultural land the 53 000 acres of Timbavati is a major conservation success story in South Africa. Bordering on Thornybush Private Reserve and adjoining Kruger Parks western boundary it’s teeming with wildlife and waiting to be discovered as part of your safari to South Africa. Its classic big five game viewing territory and you will not be disappointed in what you get to see. There are a limited number of lodges and therefore tourists and as it is a private nature reserve you can get really close to game as off road driving is permitted.
Timbavati offers a similar safari experience to Sabi sands with all inclusive accommodation, game drives, guided walks with rangers and other activities included. Expect good sightings of lions, elephants, buffaloes and a great range of plains game. The white lions that made Timbavati famous are yet to reappear. All the white cubs born in the last few years have not survived to adulthood. But the genetic traits still remain!

As with most parks in South Africa, the dry winter season is always best for game viewing. With the absence of rain and therefore vegetation it is so much easier to spot the game. Plan your safari from May to September for the best game viewing times. As the dry season extends in October and November animals tend to congregate around waterholes.
And don’t write off the green season as migrant birds arrive, the African bush comes alive and the dominant predators make abundant kills during this time.
If you are self-driving it is a half day drive from Johannesburg. But it’s a lot easier to fly and with Hoedspruit Airport being close by as well as Kruger International in Nelspruit it is far more preferable to fly.
