Choose Madikwe because it is a completely renovated conservation area that started in the 1990s with a huge reintroduction of wildlife to what was once agricultural and farmlands. Operation Phoenix was one of the largest translocations of animals every performed when entire breeding herds of elephants, buffaloes, black rhinos, white rhinos and other antelopes were moved here.
Since then, Madikwe has also successfully reintroduce rarer predatory species such as lions, cheetahs, spotted hyenas and Cape wild dogs so that the mammal population is more than 10 000. There are currently more than 60 species of mammal in the park.

It is easy to get to Madikwe Game Reserve on the border of South Africa and Botswana in Northwest Province, a malaria free safari destination. Visitors can get there from Johannesburg, Pretoria or Gaborone. Most of the game lodges situated on the western side of the Madikwe Game Reserve are accessed via the Wonderboom Gate. The safari accommodation in the eastern and central regions of Madikwe is mainly accessed via the Abjaterskop Gate.
