It is a completely renovated conservation area that started in the 1990s with a huge reintroduction of wildlife to what was once agricultural and farmlands. Operation Phoenix was one of the largest translocations of animals every performed when entire breeding herds of elephants, buffaloes, black rhinos, white rhinos and other antelopes were moved to Madikwe Game Reserve.
Since then, Madikwe has also successfully reintroduce rarer predatory species such as lions, cheetahs, spotted hyenas and African wild dogs so that the mammal population is more than 10 000. There are currently more than 60 species of mammal in the park.
