Choose a safari in Malawi that gives back to conservation and wildlife management of the impressive Majete Wildlife Reserve when you choose to stay in the elegant Thawale Tented Camp in the Lower Shire River Valley, within the Great Rift Valley, only 2 hours from Blantyre. One of the country’s largest protected areas, Majete covers 700 square km of pristine bush, enhanced by the convergence of the Shire and Mkulumadzi Rivers. The marvellous Thawale is a safari camp with a difference immersed in the wilderness of this reserve and a natural extension of it so that animals roam freely around its unfenced parameters.
African Parks runs Thawale Camp and has ensured accommodation across the board for various budgets and needs – a luxury family chalet is ideal for 4 people in two ensuite bedrooms with solid walls and a thatched roof, a modern open-air bathroom built into the rocks with sunken bath and views over the water hole, floodlit at night, so shower and game view at the same time!
The other 6 chalets are classic canvas safari tents with lovely wicker furnishings and quality décor, private decks under the trees with wonderful waterhole views. Tents are spaced out in the bush and everyone meets up in the central guest area where the kitchen is the heart of the camp, the thatched and bamboo dining area and bar also feature a great deck from which to bird or await nocturnal animals. The best dinners are those served around the boma fire under the stars and then the dancers arrive to entertain guests!
The budget camp is the community campsite beside the park entrance and this provides a lovely solar-powered self-catering campsite complete with a thatched bar, braai and dining area, toilets and hot showers. Thawale is a well-used and much-needed eco centre for environmental education camps, conservation meetings and diverse game-viewing events.
The food at Thawale is based on a traditional bush dining experience where a talented chef creates nutritious meat meals based on Malawian flavours and global influences. The best dish is the famous Mwembezi steak in the restaurant of the same name. Staff are friendly, professional and really helpful!
