Kuthengo Camp

Authentic Bush Camp on the Vast Shire River

The gorgeous Kuthengo Camp, a Robin Pope Safaris winner, sits cosily under stark Fever trees and ancient Baobabs overlooking the floodplains of the Shire river in the spectacular beauty of the Liwonde National Park in Malawi.

For a safari experience second to none, stay at Kuthengo Camp where fish eagles cry and the whole aim of this venue is immersion in nature. It’s intimate, with only 4 safari tents but these are large, modern and packed with all the luxury necessities needed for a fabulous holiday in a wilderness region.

Kuthengo is an eco-lodge that chooses special airconditioned canopy beds to keep you cool and outside showers, a bathtub, private decks and mosquito nets. Enjoy the classic touches that make this camp awesomely rustic yet extremely comfortable at the same time. The reasons you are here are mainly to see the wildlife and revel in the beauty of a magnificent landscape and silence for the soul. Waterbuck frequent the camp and numerous other animals are resident in this lush riverine environment where splendid floodplains stretch out in all directions.

How fortunate to be a part of the captivating Liwonde National Park, considered the most prolific wildlife area in Malawi. If you love smaller spaces and seeing numerous elephants and hippos, this place is for you. You won’t see many leopards or lions, but you will see herds of antelope, beautiful trees, glorious sunsets and sunrises over the vast Shire River.

Book the entire camp and meet up around the fire in the evenings – meals are shared at the canvas-covered bar and dining area and a separate comfy lounge area, open-sided, is ideal for those chill times any time of the day in a region that never gets cold. The river is so large it feels as if you are on a flat, sky-blue lake and the boat cruises take your breath away.

Voyage2Africa recommends Liwonde National Park and its magnificent setting, its wildlife and glorious rustic chic camps like Kuthengo – we can organise a tour for you into the best of Malawi’s regions, including Majete Wildlife Reserve and Lake Malawi too!

Overview

Find the captivating Kuthengo Camp in the lush and untouched Liwonde National Park of Malawi, its most prolific wildlife area and a reserve that appeals more to adventurers who want to see wildlife in a very off-the-beaten-track setting. Enjoy a safari with excellent guides who focus not only on the larger animals but on the smaller fauna and flora too.

When you stay at Kuthengo, a classic rustic chic safari camp, you can combine your safari in Liwonde with sightseeing trips to Mount Mulanje and Lake Malawi to get a real feel for Malawi. Experience the upper Shire River in the south of Malawi, where Liwonde sits on the southern tip of Lake Malombe. And it is here that you find this tiny camp, only space for 10 people at one time in four canvas chalets and one family suite.

There is wildlife everywhere and few predators – so bush walks are an experience not to be missed in a variety of grasslands, floodplains, wetlands riverine forests and more. Back at camp, there is the covered bar and dining area and the open boma fireplace, the comfy lounge area on its own with open sides so that all nature is close and the warmth of Malawi enters your very soul. Dip into the plunge pool when the going gets too hot. Sunsets here are unforgettable, no matter which angle you see it dive into the horizon, it will never cease to amaze you.

Simple yet elegant décor ensures guests’ comfort at all times, on huge soft beds, with ensuite showers and baths and an amazing cooling system for the canopied bed that is eco-friendly.  Solar power adds to the rustic off grid appeal of this amazing Malawian camp and the views are more than glorious, they are jaw-dropping in their extent of the Shire River and all its resident plants and birds.

Elephants graze around the camp and drink at the river as well as plenty of antelope and smaller mammals. Liwonde National Park never ceases to disappoint – buffalo, Lichtenstein’s hartebeest, zebra, roan and eland were historically hunted to extinction in the area. Find them protected now within ‘the sanctuary’. Black rhinos mingle with these creatures in their 4 000ha fenced area within the Park.

Voyage2Africa tailor makes your safari to Malawi with highlights being Liwonde game viewing, Majete Wildlife Reserve landscapes and the watery magic a Lake Malawi too, all ensuring wonderful luxury accommodation and excellent guiding and cooking too.
