Day to Day Itinerary
Day 1
2 NIGHTS, FULL BOARD BASIS
Arrive at Blantyre International Airport and catch your 1-hour road transfer to Huntingdon House on the slopes of Thyolo Mountain. Find the regal Huntingdon House situated within the lush Satemwa Tea Estate and discover a home that has been passed down through the generations of the Cathcart Kay family since its origins in the 1920s. An elegant, colonial-style homestead set in magnificent gardens under lovely old trees features breath-taking views of Mount Mulanje and the Lower Shire Valley.
Day 2
Take the full day to explore the estate and its magical setting – a tour of the tea factory, a visit to Mount Mulanje Massif or a short hike to Dziwe la Nkhalamba rock pool and falls. You set your own pace – spend hours in your plush suite with its ball and claw bathtubs, and full range of deluxe toiletries. Meet other guests in the cosy lounge beside the blazing log fire. Golfing, tennis, swimming, croquet, bowls and mountain biking!
Day 3
3 NIGHTS, FULL BOARD BASIS
Do some sightseeing on the 2.5-hour drive to Mkulumadzi Lodge, passing colourful local scenes of villages, agricultural fields and thick bushveld. Find the lavish lodge in the perfect setting on the confluence of the Shire and Mkulumadzi Rivers in the boundary of the majestic Majete Wildlife Reserve. Explore this captivating Big 5 reserve, one of the largest protected areas in Malawi covering more than 70,000 ha. Discover pristine Miombo woodlands, mixed Combretum forests and mosaics of riparian forests where wild animals roam. Game drives and bush walks are tops!
Days 4 – 5
Embrace all that is Mkulumadzi Lodge, an elegant safari destination set in a compelling conservation region where you can enjoy game drives, boating safaris, bush walks, hikes up Majete Hill, black rhino tracking, cultural tours, birding trips on the Shire River and wildlife spotting from a hide. Only 8 upmarket chalets peep out from under the canopy of leadwood and wild mango trees and a large outdoor dining area takes in the scintillating wilderness views.
Day 6
3 NIGHTS, FULL BOARD BASIS
Divine breakfast and farewells lead on to your 4.5-hour road transfer to Kuthengo Camp. Bird lovers will appreciate Liwonde National Park, one of the top birding locations in Southern Africa. Plus, some of the most scenic game viewing, beautiful riverine surroundings and huge open skies you could wish to find. Herds of elephants hang out in the beautiful Shire River floodplains, and you can get close to them during your boat safari on the Shire River, one of the many highlights of a stay at Kuthengo Camp.
Days 7 – 8
Explore the Shire River and lagoons – an excellent opportunity for sightings of elephants, hippos, crocodile and bird species galore. Get out your binoculars and find the rare Lillian’s lovebird, brown-breasted barbet, osprey, palm nut vulture, Pel’s fishing owl and Livingstone’s flycatcher. Spend hours in the silent viewing hide on a tributary of the Shire River and adventure into the local school and surrounding rural communities to meet the friendliest people in Africa.
Day 9
4 NIGHTS, FULL BOARD BASIS
Transfer to Pumulani Lake Lodge after breakfast by road to the awe-inspiring Nankumba Peninsula of Lake Malawi. It’s one of the most beautiful shores on the famous Lake, adjacent to Lake Malawi National Park. This World Heritage Site aims to protect the hundreds of colourful cichlid fish unique to the area. Find 10 heavenly villas sprawled along the hills boasting unique shapes and modern amenities with plenty of space to admire the views all day. Two infinity swimming pools merge with the lake waters.
Days 10 – 12
Meet some real Malawians when you wander through local villages and see the beautiful fabrics and learn more about the rural lifestyle here. Simply relax in the rare tranquillity or adventure out into the lake to try water sports galore such as snorkelling, fishing, sailing, kayaking, water skiing, wakeboarding and fun tube rides. Dine in style outside on the terrace and watch the sun set golden into the waters.
Day 13
On the final day of your stay at glorious Pumulani, enjoy a swim and a fresh breakfast before you bid farewell. You will be transferred back to Lilongwe in time for your onward connection flight and plans.
